Gardening in Southern Idaho

Welcome to the Rocky Mountain region‚ where gardening is an adventure. It is truly a pleasure to awaken to a day when the early fog melts before a warm sun that beholds snow-capped peaks in a majestic morning blush.

Few regions on earth possess such diversity of climates and plant communities – from the higher elevations to the large expanses of the High Plains. Rugged‚ rocky slopes and snow-capped mountain peaks rise above vast basins‚ lakes and alpine meadows. We have some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. But our region is separated from large bodies of water by expanses of soaring mountains‚ foothills‚ plains‚ and even deserts. You are likely to find moist conditions at higher elevations and along the river drainages. It is not uncommon for drought to occur anywhere in our region at almost any time of year. To many of us who settle here‚ it is often a challenge to grow the plants with which we were familiar in other parts of the country.

Gardening in the Rockies is different‚ but with proper planning and maintenance‚ cultivating a “green thumb” reaps rewarding and enjoyable results.
